Pivotal to the contemporary Hawaiian Sovereignty movement, Haunani Kay Trask is a Kanaka Maoli scholar, poet and activist. Her activism started in the 1970’s with the Kaho’olawe movement to her years spent teaching at the University of Hawai’i. She is known to have been instrumental in developing the Hawaiian Studies Department at the University of Hawai’i, expanding the school and courses to reflect the needs of a growing Native Hawaiian student body. She was strongly outspoken against colonization in the Pacific, especially of her own lands being colonized by the United States. Through her work, hundreds of Native Hawaiian and Pacific peoples have been inspired to speak out against injustice and colonization in our homelands as well.
